It wasn’t too long ago that Auburn looked unbeatable this season. The Tigers still have a 25-4 record, but three of its losses have come in their last six games against Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas. With only two games left, Auburn likely has first place in the SEC locked up, but will still need a win to fend off Kentucky and Arkansas. While Mississippi State isn’t in Auburn’s league in terms of talent, it is catching Auburn at an awkward point in the season. Auburn’s offensive and defensive ratings have slipped as of late and the team is reeling heading into the SEC tournament. Slow teams tend to frustrate Auburn, and Mississippi State plays at the 270th fastest pace in the nation compared to Auburn’s 51st ranked pace.
This leads to fewer possessions for Auburn and generally leads to favorites having a hard time covering larger spreads. The two teams are at a mismatch on paper, but it might just be that Auburn is already looking ahead to the playoffs rather than these last two games. Mississippi State has likely checked out for the year, but in College, teams tend to still get up for these late-season matchups, especially if it means beating a team at the top of the conference standings. Still, I’m not eager to take the points with the Bulldogs because of the talent mismatch. Instead, I’ll take a cue from the slow pace of the home team and bet the under in this game.
