Houston Texans vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Date & Time: Monday, January 12, 2026 — 8:15 p.m. ET
Location: Acrisure Stadium — Pittsburgh, PA
TV: ESPN / ABC
Round: AFC Wild Card Playoffs

This Wild Card matchup closes out the NFL’s opening round of postseason play — and it’s a heavyweight defensive duel between two teams with very different paths to this point. Houston enters on a roller-coaster resurgence, while Pittsburgh clinched its division the hard way in Week 18.

How Each Team Finished the Season

Houston Texans (12-5)

The Texans caught fire late, winning nine straight games to end the regular season — including a decisive victory in Week 18 against the Indianapolis Colts. That impressive run pulled them into the playoffs as a Wild Card team, but it also carried them to the postseason on the back of a defense that finished among the NFL’s best and an offense that steadily improved as the season went on.

Defensively, Houston was elite. They allowed the fewest yards per game in the league, were top-tier against the pass and rush, and boasted a +17 turnover margin — second-best in the NFL. This unit, led by Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, consistently dominated opposing quarterbacks.

Offensively, quarterback C.J. Stroud stabilized the unit — finishing with over 3,000 passing yards and keeping mistakes to a minimum. But Houston can still be methodical rather than explosive, leaning on balance and control rather than shoot-outs.

A historical note: the Texans have never won a playoff game on the road in franchise history, and this game is their first road postseason trip since 2002. That’s a key storyline heading into this matchup.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7)

The Steelers closed their season by winning 4 of their last 5 games, capped by a dramatic Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens that sealed the AFC North title and a home playoff game. However, Pittsburgh’s playoff history is rough in recent years — they’ve lost six straight postseason games, most recently in 2024 to the Ravens and earlier wild-card losses stretching back multiple seasons.

Offensively, the Steelers struggled for consistency during the 2025 campaign. Their unit ranked in the mid-20s in total offensive yards and rushing offense, and although veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for over 3,300 yards with a strong touchdown-to-interception ratio, Pittsburgh’s offense often sputtered or played conservatively.

Running back Jaylen Warren provided balance on the ground and with short receiving work, while wideout D.K. Metcalf has been a key deep threat when healthy. But the Steelers offense still ranked just around league average in points scored.

Defensively, Pittsburgh was vulnerable at times, surrendering more yards than most teams, especially against the pass. Their chance to slow Houston lies in pressure and bending but not breaking — a task easier said than done.

Quarterbacks & Key Players to Know

Texans

  • C.J. Stroud (QB): Efficient passer with mobility and poise. Stroud’s development this year is a major reason Houston is in the playoffs.

  • Will Anderson Jr. (DE): Texans’ defensive lynchpin, capable of game-changing pressure.
  • Danielle Hunter (DE): Veteran pass rusher with history versus Rodgers, adds pressure and disruption.
  • Nico Collins (WR): Stroud’s top downfield target — consistent and explosive.

Steelers

  • Aaron Rodgers (QB): At age 42, still sharp and experienced — especially in clutch situations — though Pittsburgh’s offense isn’t explosive.
  • Jaylen Warren (RB): Multi-faceted back who contributes both rushing and receiving yards.
  • D.K. Metcalf (WR): Deep threat when healthy — can stretch the field against Houston’s secondary.
  • Cam Heyward (DL): Steelers’ veteran defensive anchor and recent All-Pro honoree.

 Injury & Game Status Updates

Texans Injury/Status

  • Davis Mills (QB): Backup quarterback who didn’t travel with the team initially due to the birth of his son and is questionable for this game. However, Mills is expected to arrive before kickoff and serve as emergency depth if needed.
  • Ajani Carter (CB): Ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Houston’s injury list is otherwise short, and the key starters — especially on defense — are healthy and ready to go.

Steelers Injury/Status

Pittsburgh doesn’t have major injuries reported to top players entering this matchup (Rodgers, Warren, Metcalf, etc.), and most starters are expected to play — a boost for a team that relies on continuity and experience.

 Odds & Betting Trends

Sportsbooks have made the Texans slight favorites on the road, with a spread typically around Texans −3 to −3.5 and moneyline odds favoring Houston.

Sample Odds Snapshot:

  • Texans −3 (Spread)
  • Texans −162 (Moneyline)
  • Total: ~38.5-39.5 points (UNDER potential)

A relatively low total reflects expectations of defensive dominance and a grind it out style from both teams, especially Houston’s top-tier unit.

Trend wise, the Texans have performed better down the stretch, but road playoff history looms large. Meanwhile, the Steelers are strong at home but historically poor in postseason results over the past decade.

 Prediction

This game shapes up as a defensive chess match. Houston’s elite defense will look to keep Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense uncomfortable in short, awkward down-and-distance situations. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, will try to control the clock with Warren, short passes, and field position while forcing errors from Stroud.

Final Prediction:
Texans 24, Steelers 20

  • Houston’s defense makes just enough plays, and Stroud manages the game well.
  • Pittsburgh’s home crowd and Rodgers’ experience keep it close, but the Texans’ balance and momentum finally break the road playoff win drought.

Bottom Line: Expect a physical, low-to-moderate scoring game full of defense, key fourth-quarter plays, and strategic play-calling. The Texans’ confidence and statistical edge give them the slight nudge in what should be an excellent Monday Night Football playoff thriller.
