Major League Baseball All Star Game July 19, 2022

Dodger stadium

For the second time, and first since 1980, the Los Angeles Dodgers will host the MLB All-Star game on Tuesday, July 19.  The game will not determine who hosts the World Series, as that privilege goes to the team with the best record during the regular season. This Fall Classic will be managed by Astros manager Dusty Baker in the AL, and the Braves manager Brian Snitker, both of whom won their respective pennants last season.

The American League has a nice 8-game winning streak dating back to 2013- there was no All-Star game in 2020 due to Covid. All the games the past 10 years have been relatively low scoring for All-Star games. With the exception of 2018 when 14 runs were scored, the most runs scored have been 9 or fewer. The New York Yankees who lead the majors in wins, also lead the way with 6 All-Stars selected. This year there will be 30 players playing for the first time. For the second year in a row, Angels star Shohei Ohtani was selected as both a hitter and a pitcher. He was the only player ever selected as both last year, and now he done it twice in a row- he will start for the AL as the DH.

So far this season he has played in 84 of the Angels 87 games. He is also the Home Run Derby favorite at +190. While the starting pitchers have not been announced at the time of this writing, I can see LA Kershaw getting the nod as he represents the host city Los Angeles, and the same can be said for Tony Gonsolin. As of now, the NL is a slight favorite at -118, while the AL is -102. The over/under is 11 runs.

I like the MLB All-Star game the best because I think you get the most out of the players, despite not playing for home-field in the World Series anymore. In the NFL Pro-Bowl, nobody hits anyone. You cant blame them for not wanting to get hurt or hurt someone in a meaningless game. In the NBA, there is hardly any D played with 300+ points usually scored. Its more like a Harlem Globetrotters game.

The NHLs All-Star game also lacks D and big hits like the NFL. But with baseball, you seem to get the best out of the players, while still being fun to watch. One other thing to look for this year are the uniforms. While each player will wear their own team logo, all the colors will be the same, and they look pretty sharp IMO. I think this year, the tide will turn in favor of the NL, and they get the first win since 2012.
