Super Bowl LVl: Cincinnati (+4.5) Surprised Me

Super Bowl 56

Super Bowl LVI is now just around the corner. It's not too often we see a 10-win team make the Super Bowl, but here the Cincinnati Bengals are. Up until last year, no team has ever played the Super Bowl in their home stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the first team to accomplish that feat when they not only played in, but won the Super Bowl on their home turf. This year, the LA Rams will be the second team to play on their own field, and likely the second team to win it at home too. Technically, the Rams will be the visiting team because of how the NFL switches between the AFC and NFC each year. All the home team really gets is to call the opening coin toss, but other than that, the Rams will have all the home field advantages, including getting to stay in their own locker room. They'll have the home crowd behind them, they won't have to travel, they are used to the climate, and the field itself. All of these are huge advantages. So much so that that is why the better team does not get to host the Super Bowl, unless it's like in these past two years where it was a fluke.

It's not like hockey, baseball or basketball where the better team gets home-field advantage, and the worse of the two teams at least gets to play some of the best of 7 games at home. The Super Bowl is a one-and-done game, and that is why it often is on a neutral site. Despite these advantages, and having a better record, the Los Angeles Rams are only 4-point favorite. Now, usually the home team gets an automatic 3 points with the odds, so in this case, I wonder if the game were played on a neutral site, would the Rams just be 1-point favorite? The Bengals proved they belong here by winning the AFC North, but are they really better than the Titans, Chiefs and Bills? They did beat the Chiefs twice this year! In the NFC, were the Rams really better than the Packers? But that is why the games are played on the field and not on paper. It's funny looking at the Bengals regular season because they lost to the Browns twice, the Bears and Jets. It seems like the should win this game by more than 4 points, even if it were to be played on a neutral site. But with the Super Bowl, there are so many fun prop bets to make, like the coin toss, color of the Gatorade, length of the National Anthem, that I would take the opportunity to wager on one of those fun props while you have the chance.
