The road to Super Bowl LXI runs through a crowded field of contenders

August 2026

The football is almost here.

Training camp has given way to the preseason, rosters are taking shape, and across the NFL, 32 teams are convincing themselves that this could be the year. Of course, by January, most of those dreams will be gone.

But which teams have a legitimate shot?

After looking over the league, there are several clubs that stand out to me. Some are proven contenders, some are trying to bounce back, and a few could surprise everybody.

One thing is certain: this should be a fascinating NFL season. The game will be played at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, kicking off at 3:30 PM EST. The weather forecast predicts clear skies with a high of 52°F and a light breeze of 5-8 mph, ideal conditions for football. With no rain or wind expected, both teams should be able to execute their game plans without environmental interference.

Key Players to Watch

Georgia Bulldogs

  1. Carson Beck (QB) Beck has been the steady leader of Georgia’s offense this season, showcasing excellent accuracy and poise. His ability to spread the ball to multiple receivers will challenge Texas State’s defense.

  2. Brock Bowers (TE) Bowers is arguably the best tight end in college football, combining size, speed, and hands to dominate opposing defenses. He will be a matchup nightmare for Texas State’s secondary.

  3. Jamon Dumas-Johnson (LB) Dumas-Johnson anchors Georgia’s defense, excelling in both run-stopping and pass coverage. His leadership will be key in shutting down Texas State’s offensive weapons.

Texas State Bobcats

  1. T.J. Finley (QB) Finley, a transfer from Auburn, has brought experience and stability to the Bobcats’ offense. His ability to make plays under pressure will be critical against Georgia’s elite defense.

  2. Ismail Mahdi (RB) Mahdi has been the heart of Texas State’s rushing attack, using his vision and agility to create big plays. He’ll face a significant challenge against Georgia’s stout defensive line.

  3. Jordan Revels (DE) Revels leads Texas State’s defense with his relentless pass rush. His ability to disrupt Carson Beck’s timing will be vital if the Bobcats hope to slow down Georgia’s offense.

Key Matchups

  1. Georgia’s Offensive Line vs. Texas State’s Defensive Front Georgia’s offensive line, one of the best in the nation, will look to neutralize Texas State’s pass rush. If the Bulldogs dominate in the trenches, they will have no trouble moving the ball.

  2. Brock Bowers vs. Texas State’s Linebackers and Safeties Stopping Bowers is a daunting task for any defense. Texas State will need a combination of physicality and scheme creativity to limit his impact on the game.

  3. Georgia’s Defense vs. T.J. Finley Finley’s ability to read Georgia’s complex defensive schemes will be tested. The Bulldogs excel at creating confusion and forcing turnovers, so Finley must play a clean game to keep the Bobcats competitive.

 Injury Reports

Georgia Bulldogs

  • Daijun Edwards (RB) – Probable (knee) Edwards has been a key part of Georgia’s rushing attack. His presence would give the Bulldogs a boost in maintaining offensive balance.

 • Javon Bullard (DB) – Questionable (ankle) Bullard’s status is a concern for Georgia’s secondary. If he’s unavailable, Texas State may look to exploit the middle of the field. Texas State Bobcats

  • Calvin Hill (RB) – Out (shoulder) Hill’s absence puts more pressure on Ismail Mahdi to carry the load in the running game.

  • Gavin Graham (LB) – Questionable (hamstring) Graham’s availability is crucial for Texas State’s defense, particularly in containing Georgia’s rushing attack.

Odds and Betting Lines

Unsurprisingly, Georgia enters this game as a heavy favorite, with sportsbooks listing the Bulldogs as 38.5-point favorites. The over/under is set at 56.5 points, reflecting expectations of a high-scoring game dominated by Georgia.

Key betting trends to consider:

  • Georgia is 8-2 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 home games.

 • Texas State is 6-4 ATS as an underdog this season, showing resilience against stronger opponents.

  • The total has gone under in 7 of Georgia’s last 10 games, largely due to their dominant defense limiting scoring opportunities for opponents.

Predicted Outcome

This matchup heavily favors Georgia in nearly every aspect, from talent and depth to coaching and experience. The Bulldogs’ offense, led by Carson Beck and Brock Bowers, should have no trouble moving the ball against Texas State’s defense. Meanwhile, Georgia’s defense, one of the best in the nation, is well-equipped to shut down the Bobcats’ offense.

For Texas State, the key will be limiting mistakes and taking advantage of any opportunities Georgia may provide, such as turnovers or special teams lapses. However, the talent gap between these teams is significant, and Georgia’s dominance in the trenches will likely dictate the game.

Prediction

Georgia 49, Texas State 10

The Bulldogs should cruise to a comfortable victory, showcasing their dominance on both sides of the ball. Expect Carson Beck to have a strong performance, with Brock Bowers contributing multiple big plays. Texas State will fight hard but ultimately struggle to match Georgia’s physicality and depth.
