AL East Race Heating Up!

Tampa Bay holds the lead, but New York and Boston are closing in with the season entering its final stretch

TAMPA BAY — With the dog days of summer giving way to the most important weeks of the baseball season, the American League East has become one of the most intriguing races in Major League Baseball.

At the moment, the Tampa Bay Rays sit comfortably in first place with a 68–46 record, holding a 4½-game advantage over the New York Yankees and a five-game lead over the Boston Red Sox.

But comfortable does not mean safe.

There are still nearly two months of baseball remaining, and both New York and Boston have plenty of firepower. In fact, Boston's remarkable turnaround has transformed what once looked like a distant playoff dream into a legitimate division chase.

The question now is simple:

Who will be standing on top of the AL East when the regular season ends?

1. TAMPA BAY RAYS — 72–46

The Rays have been the surprise story of the division from the beginning, and at 22 games over .500, they have earned their position at the top.

Tampa Bay has combined young talent, pitching and an aggressive style of play to put itself in position to win its first division title since 2010. The club also made several moves at the trade deadline, showing that management believes this is a team capable of making noise in October.

Key Player: Junior Caminero

If there is one player who symbolizes the Rays' rise, it may be Junior Caminero.

The 23-year-old third baseman has developed into one of the most dangerous young hitters in baseball. He entered the All-Star break with 29 home runs and followed that up with a spectacular July, winning American League Player of the Month after batting .327 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs during the month.

Caminero is more than just a promising young player now. He has become the centerpiece of Tampa Bay's lineup.

The concern for Tampa Bay: Can a relatively young team maintain its pace while the Yankees and Red Sox apply pressure?

For now, the answer appears to be yes.

2. NEW YORK YANKEES — 66–52

The Yankees find themselves in an unusual position.

At 64–51, they are having a very good season by almost any standard — but in the AL East, "very good" currently means second place.

New York's biggest challenge has been staying healthy. Captain Aaron Judge has missed significant time with a fractured rib, while Cody Bellinger, who has been one of the Yankees' most important players this season, recently suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain expected to keep him out four to six weeks.

And yet the Yankees continue to win.

Key Player: Aaron Judge

Even while sidelined, Judge remains the player who could have the biggest effect on the division race.

The Yankees are hoping their captain can return during August. If Judge comes back healthy and produces anywhere close to his normal level, New York could suddenly look like a completely different club down the stretch.

That is what makes the Yankees so dangerous.

They are only 4½ games behind Tampa Bay despite missing some of their biggest stars.

If Judge returns, and if Bellinger eventually comes back healthy, the Yankees could make a serious run at the division championship.

3. BOSTON RED SOX — 64–54

Perhaps no team in the American League has changed its fortunes more dramatically than Boston.

Not long ago, the Red Sox looked like a team that might be preparing to sell at the trade deadline. Then everything changed.

Boston went on a remarkable winning streak, including a 14-game winning streak and a 19–2 stretch that turned the Red Sox from possible sellers into aggressive buyers.

And Boston didn't simply stand pat at the deadline.

The Red Sox made one of the biggest moves in baseball by acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschmanfrom Baltimore. Rutschman has battled injuries this season, but the Red Sox clearly believe his presence can make them a much more dangerous team for the stretch run.

Key Player: Wilyer Abreu

One player who has helped fuel Boston's surge is outfielder Wilyer Abreu.

In July, Abreu became the first Red Sox player since Mookie Betts in 2016 to record back-to-back multi-home-run games. His second two-homer performance came during Boston's 12th consecutive victory.

If Abreu continues producing in the middle of the Boston lineup, and Rutschman returns healthy, the Red Sox have a legitimate chance to make this division race very uncomfortable for both Tampa Bay and New York.

WHO WINS THE AL EAST?

This may be one of those races that comes down to the final week of the season.

Tampa Bay has the advantage right now. The Rays have the best record, the division lead and momentum. They also have a young superstar in Caminero who looks capable of carrying an offense for years to come.

But I wouldn't count out New York.

The Yankees are only 4½ games back, and their situation could change dramatically if Aaron Judge returns healthy. The Yankees have the experience and star power to make up ground quickly.

And then there is Boston.

The Red Sox may actually be the most dangerous team of the three right now. Their remarkable midseason surge has given them confidence, and the addition of Rutschman shows that Boston believes it has a legitimate shot at October.

My Prediction

1. New York Yankees
2. Tampa Bay Rays
3. Boston Red Sox

Yes — I'm going against the current standings.

My pick to win the American League East is the New York Yankees.

The reason is simple: Aaron Judge.

If Judge returns healthy and the Yankees can get their injured players back over the next several weeks, I believe New York has enough depth, power and experience to overcome Tampa Bay's current lead.

But it will be close.

I expect the Rays to stay right there until the final weeks, while Boston could make things even more interesting if its recent hot streak continues.

One thing is certain: the American League East is going to be one of baseball's best races to watch from now until the final out of the regular season.
