The New York Yankees made a run at the LA Dodgers for the top spot in the MLB Power Rankings. LA was still the unanimous #1 with the voters, but the Yanks have won 13 of the past 14 and are the hottest team in baseball right now. LA still has the most wins, and best winning percentage in the majors, but the Yankees have played 4 less games than the Dodgers. If the Yankees were to win those 4 games that the Dodgers have in hand, then New York would have a one game lead over LA. But with a league leading 5 game winning streak, and 9-1 over their last 10 which includes taking 3 of 4 from the Houston Astros, NY is gradually adding to their AL East division lead over the Tampa Bay Rays, which is now a 6.5 game lead. The Dodgers hold a huge 12 game lead in the NL West over 2nd place Colorado.
The Rockies, despite being 12 games back, are tied with the Phillies for the 2nd wild-card spot in the National league, so while the NL West is pretty much wrapped up before the All-Star break, the Rockies, and even the Padres and D-Backs, still have a lot to play for as they are within 2 games of a wild-card spot. The Yankees will play cross-town rivals the Mets for a quick 2 game series at the Mets, then travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays. If the Yankees can take 3 of 4 from Tampa, that would put some serious space between those two teams, and give NY even more momentum heading into the All-Stare break, but if Tampa can take 3 of 4 or sweep at home, they can still hang around for a shot at the division. As it stands now, the Rays have the top AL wild-card spot by 2.5 games over Texas.
