We're about midway through round two of the NHL finals. Most of the series are pretty close at 2 games to 1. But the Carolina Hurricanes are playing really good hockey right now, and have a 2-0 series lead against the New York Islanders. The Canes opened the playoffs with two quick losses to the defending champion Washington Capitals. But after that, they went on to defeat the Caps in 7 games, and took the first two against the Islanders, giving them a 6-1 postseason record since those initial two losses to open the playoffs.
Not only do they now have a huge 2-0 lead, but they get to play the next two games at home, and they are -125 game 3 home favorites. I think if they can just split at home, they will win the series. But if NY somehow can return the favor and win the next two, then I believe the momentum shifts and NY will end up winning the series. I'm still not sold on who will win the cup this year. The defending champs are out, the best regular season team in the Lightning are out, the next best regular season team in the Flames are out. Boston was tied with Calgary for points with 107, but they find themselves in a 2-1 hole against the Blue Jackets, and face them in Columbus for game 4 where the Jackets are -125 favorites.
I'm still leaning towards the Bruins to win it all, but the Hurricanes are right there now for how they are playing as of late. I just don't picture the San Jose Sharks, Stars or Blues winning it, though St. Louis does have a 2-1 lead over Dallas, but plays game 4 at Dallas where the Stars are -120 favorites. I think after the next round of games, we'll start to get a clearer picture of who will likely advance to the conference championships next week.
