The latest power rankings are out in the MLB, and while we are still early in the season, trends are already beginning to form. The LA Dodgers are at the top to start out the week. They lead the MLB in wins with 19, and are first in the NL with winning percentage at .633. They trail just Tampa Bay for best winning percentage in baseball. The Rays are 18-9 overall this year and have a .667 winning percentage.
They had a bit of a lull last week when the dropped 4 in a row, including a 3 game sweep vs the Red Sox, but they bounced back to "sweep" the Red Sox this weekend, taking the last 2 of a 3 game series after the first game was called due to rain. Despite the best record in baseball, they are third in the rankings. The Houston Astros dropped from #1 last week to #2 this week after splitting a 4 game series with the Indians. While it is too early to tell who will run away with the 6 divisions this season, we can already write some teams off more or less.
The Marlins with only 8 wins on the year are already 8 games back in the NL East, and the Kansas City Royals have just 9 wins and are 8.5 back in the AL Central. I think the closest division will be the competitive NL Central. St. Louis is playing really well, just a couple percentage points behind LA, but the Cubs, Brewers, and Pirates are just 2.5, 3, and 4.5 games out respectively. They have a big series with the Washington Nationals coming up to start the week, and the streaking Dodgers will travel north to San Francisco to open the week against their rival Giants.
