Who Were the Three Big NCAAB Loosers?

Tennessee, Villanova, and Kansas State

Those three NCAAB teams were the big losers this past week in college hoops. As I expected, Kentucky took care of Tennessee, and they did so decisively 86-69. That win moved the Wildcats up a spot to #4, but dropped the Volunteers out of their top perch to #5. So who took over that top spot? Duke of course. Duke had a couple tough games beating #3 Virginia and #16 Louisville before getting a bit of a break this weekend when they hosted NC State. Gonzaga and Virginia also moved up a spot each, so the top spots are Duke, Gonzaga, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Nevada, and Michigan in both the AP and Coaches poll. It isn't until the 8th seed that we get some discrepancy between the two polls with North Carolina and Houston flip-flopping 8 and 9. Villanova was on an 11 game winning streak before losing two of their last three contests.

They first lost at #10 Marquette, then beat Providence at home, but somehow lost to St. John's this weekend despite having a 14 point lead. They'll get to play Marquette again next week, this time at home, so if they can win out the regular season I think they'l be o.k. heading into the tournament. Kansas State also fell a few spots. After a big win against #13 Kansas a couple of weeks ago, they fell at home this weekend to #23 Iowa State by 12 points; that win moved the Cyclones into the top 20 in both polls. Their match-up against #14 Texas Tech to close out the regular season should be a great game with big tournament seedings on the line. There's some big games on the schedule this week. Virginia Tech hosting Virgina should be a close one. Virginia also is on the road later in the week against Louisville so they have a tough week ahead of them.

Tennessee gets to go on the road to LSU, so a road win Saturday should keep them in the National Championship conversation. The big game will be Sunday when #7 Michigan hosts #10 Michigan State in what should be a great game. That game is 12:45 p.m. PT.  They'll also play each other in a couple weeks, next time at State, to close out their regular seasons. But awful news for the Spartans. With a season ending injury to junior guard Joshua Langford, they suffered another injury when junior center Nick Ward suffered a hand injury, but at least he is expected to return before season's end, probably in time for that re-match with the Wolverines.
