The granddaddy of them all when it comes to bowl games kicks off tomorrow in the annual New Year's Day Rose Bowl game. Ohio State will square off against Washington State in what will be coach Urban Meyer's last game for the Buckeyes. Each team has played in the Rose Bow 15 times, but this will be the first time they play against each other. Ohio State finished their season ranked 6th, and the Huskies of Washington State 9th. The Buckeyes were 12-1, and are a big 6.5 point favorite, and -270 with the money line.
The Huskies are +220, and the over/under is currently 57.5 points. The Huskies finished the season strongly with 4 straight wins, the last two against ranked teams. Ohio State Buckeyes only loss came at Purdue way back in mid-October when they fell 49-20. That loss probably kept them out of the playoffs. They finished the season with 5 straight wins, 3 of them against ranked teams, including #4 rival Michigan where they handled them 62-39. Coach Meyer has the second best record in bowl games at 11-3 , yet surprisingly this will be his first, and likely his last time coaching the Rose Bowl. Though he is retiring as a coach, he will remain at Ohio State as the assistant athletic director.
Ohio State only has a 54% chance of winning based on ESPN's Power Football Index, but given Meyer's bowl history, and the motivation his team will have for 1- getting left out of the playoffs and 2- wanting to send Meyer out on top, I am pretty certain they win this game. Will they win it by 6.5 points? I think they do!
