The 2018-19 NFL football season kicks off this Thursday when the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host the Atlanta Falcons in a rematch of last year’s NFC Divisional round playoff game. Last January, the Eagles held on to win 15-10.
Philadelphia is just a slight 1.5-point favorite, and the over/under is 45 points. It looks as if the Eagles will be going with Nick Foles as their starting QB for the opener, as Carson Wentz continues to rehab and work on his return. Foles had a great post season last year, ultimately ending with a Super Bowl ring and an MVP award to go along with it, but so far in pre-season, he has seemed shaky, throwing 2 interceptions and no touchdowns.
Atlanta is looking for their third straight 10- win season. QB Matt Ryan is coming off a contract extension which makes him the 2nd highest paid QB in the league just behind Aaron Rodgers. He should have a bounce-back season from his somewhat down year last year. The Eagles have a 63.8% chance of winning based on ESPN’s matchup predictor. They are -125 with the money line, while the Falcons are +105.
I think the game will be decided by more than one point either way, so I’d probably lay off the spread and take the money line. Atlanta is looking for revenge, and Philly may have a bit of a hangover, so I would lean towards the Falcons for the opener.
