Russia and Croatia: Sunday July 7, 2018
The host nation, Russia, will be taking on Croatia at the Fisht Stadium, on Saturday, 7th July, to determine which European nation will book a spot in the semifinals.
Russia has defied all odds by beating one of the tournament favorites, Spain, in the round of 16. Even though La Furia Roja was able to complete more than 1,100 passes in the game, they were unable to find a way through the mighty Russian defense. Sbornaya conceded, only due to an own goal from veteran Sergei Ignashevich. Russia will be playing a similar game against Croatia, by digging deep and letting the opposition distribute the ball. Artem Dzyuba, Igor Akinfeev, Denis Cheryshev, and Aleksandar Golovin will be the key players for Russia in this quarterfinal.
Croatia had to take the game against Denmark to penalties to beat them 3 – 2. Even though they have talented players such as Mario Mandžuki?, Ivan Rakiti?, Ivan Periši?, and Luka Modri?, their form is not up to the mark. Luka Modri? will need to utilize his creativity if the Croatians are to exploit any weakness in the Russian defense.
The game between Russia and Croatia will be extremely close, most probably going all the way to the penalties. The odds are in favor of Croatia; crushing the Russian dream of progressing to the next round.
