If you’ve been following all the latest reports about this year’s Kentucky Derby, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard about the four horses Audible, Magnum Moon, Vino Rosso, and Noble Indy. In fact, we’re sure you’ve definitely heard about Magnum Moon, considering it’s been this year’s undefeated performer so far. All bets seem to be on Moon to win this year’s Derby.
Anyway, getting back to the point, there’s something that all 4 of these horses have in common – their trainer happens to be Todd Pletcher. So, who’s Todd Pletcher? Well, let’s just say he’s a horse trainer who’s been the recipient of the Eclipse Award for Top Trainer 7 times.
Pletcher’s been awarded the Eclipse Award for very good reasons. After all, we’re talking about someone who could very well be the best trainer possible. The proof is in his track record. Here are a just a handful of his wins in the past.
- 2004: 3-year-old filly Ashado, trained by Pletcher, wins the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and also, the Breeder’s Cup.
- 2005: Pletcher sets record for single season earnings by winning ten Grade 1 races, such as the Travers Stakes with his horse, Flower Valley and with Bandini at the Blue Grass Stakes.
- 2007: Pletcher’s Rags to Riches takes the Triple Crown, becoming the first filly to win the race after 1905.
So, how did four of the same trainer’s horses end up at the 2018 Kentucky Derby? Well, it all boils down to his training prowess. Pletcher is a pure professional and when you’re that perfect, it’s not a surprise that four of your horses end up qualifying for the same race.
