Top Three Contenders of Kentucky Derby 2017
The 143rd Kentucky Derby will take place on the 6th of May and fans are all gearing up across the country for one of America's most iconic and loved events. First of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, the ’Run for the Roses’ is perhaps the most anticipated of the three events. The Kentucky Derby purse is said to amount to $2 million, a staggering amount that is a fitting homage to the importance of the race to its fans.
Naturally, a race of this magnitude also means plenty of betting. And what with its stakes and exciting history, people are drawn to betting on the contenders in droves. Here are our top three picks of the contenders who we think have the best chance at winning.
- 1. Always Dreaming: after his legendary wins at the Florida Derby on April 1 and at Tampa Bay Downs in January, Always Dreaming definitely deserves to be number one on the top three list of contenders to the Kentucky Derby. Especially since he's being trained by none other than Todd Pletcher himself, there are already rumors that Always Dreaming may take away the purse of this year's Kentucky Derby.
- 2. Classic Empire: Classic Empire is a horse with a lot of promise. The odds placed on him are +400, and he will definitely be one of the most sought after horses for betting. Specially notable is his crowning as the two-year-old champion last year. His presence in the Run for the Roses can give the other contenders a formidable challenge to overcome. But then again, one of the Kentucky Derby’s most amazing qualities is its highly unpredictable nature- there's absolutely no saying how things can tip over! While Classic Empire could be the most obvious choice to pick, some may refrain from picking him because of his performance at Holy Bull's Grade 2, where he came third. The winners of that race are going to participate in this one as well, so it looks like Classic Empire has a lot to look out for in this year's Derby.
- 3. Irish War Cry: at first glance, Irish War Cry could appear to be the most obvious choice of contender to bet on, if Holy Bull was anything to go by. Besides, Irish War Cry has also won almost every race he has participated in. However, his dismal performance in the Fountain of Youth Grace Grade 2 in March have raised doubts about whether he can do well in this race as well, especially since he dropped down to seventh place!
