What You Should Know

The Kentucky Derby can be described as an iconic event of the U.S., one that celebrates the southern culture. It is the longest running sporting event in the country, one that has consistently given us some edge- of- the- seat minutes of racing action. No wonder this is one of the most popular events in racing tradition with innumerable ‘fans’ lining up to  bet the Kentucky Derby and hope Lady Luck smiles upon them.  Of course, as the seasoned racing enthusiasts know, the secret lies not just with luck but in using your judgment to win Kentucky Derby bets.

Favorites to Win the Kentucky Derby

Betting on the Kentucky Derby need not be a high stakes game if you play your cards right and do some homework before deciding which contender you want to support.  Taking the time to discover which contender is the crowd’s favorite to win the top spot is a great investment indeed. So, here is what you need to know about the favorites and odds

Nyquist- the top Kentucky Derby favorite

Nyquist is the crowd favorite to win the 142 Kentucky Derby  and with good reason. The colt has had an undefeated 7- 0 run so far, which is quite an impressive record for any contender. He was the winner of the Breeder’s Cup- Juvenile last year and also the April 2 Florida Derby where his strong performance demonstrated that he has what it takes to canter away with the cup. The odds for Nyquist stand at 10- 3.

The two year old colt has been trained by Doug O’Neill and he has faced some skepticism from regulars about his ability to sustain his dominance in the longer Triple Crown races. His less than great Beyer Speed figures are also a reason for some questions being raised about his place as favorite for the Derby. However, Nyquist has the tactical speed advantage that may allow Jockey Mario Gutierrez to make a race winning move at the right time. Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh had this same advantage and you should be factoring this in when using your judgment to win Kentucky Derby bets.

The Next in Line Contenders who may surprise in this years Kentucky Derby

Also favored is Mohaymen, also an unbeaten contender who put up a good show at the Florida Derby. Another horse that is a popular choice for winner is Exagerrator and both these contenders are attracting 8- 1 odds right now. Reports from top offshore sportsbooks indicate that early money betting is slightly skewed in favor of Mohaymen, though.

The gray colt finished fourth in the Florida Derby although he was a crowd favorite and that has slightly dampened the enthusiasm for him. But trainer McLaughlin shrugs the loss off and points out that the colt had shipped from the training center to the Gulfstream Park venue only on race day. Mohaymen is a son of Tapit and he won his Belmont Park debut as well as the Nashua and Remsen Stakes.

Exaggerator has been doing very well at practice runs, giving good cause for expectations to mount. This California based horse won the Santa Anita Derby in April by an impressive 61/4 lengths.   However, it is worth remembering that Exaggerator has been overshadowed by Nyquist thrice already. His trainer is Keith Desormeaux whose brother Kent is the jockey.
