This Sunday will wrap up the second half of the Elite 8 games. All four number 1 seeds remain at this point. Virginia will take on #10 Syracuse, who is the lowest ranked seed remaining, and only double digit seed left, and North Carolina will take on 6th ranked Notre Dame in the second game Sunday. Syracuse is coming off a big win against # 11 Gonzaga. Despite being lower seeded, Syracuse was still a 5 point underdog, but wound up winning on a game that came down to the wire.
It was a low scoring game, 63-60. I thought if Cuse could hold the Zags to under 80 they would win, and I was right, but I didn't think it would be that low scoring for both teams, 12.5 points below the 135.5 over/under. Syracuse really should have been in one of the play in games, and now they are one win away from the Final Four. North Carolina is coming off a big 15 point win against 5th ranked Indiana, and easily covered their 5 point spread. Favorites went 7-1 in the Sweet 16, Gonzaga the only favorite to fall. For Roy Williams, North Carolina's coach, this will be his 12th Elite 8 appearance; only Coach K and Dean Smith have more than 12.
Notre Dame is coming off a 5 point win against 7th seeded Wisconsin. So this Sunday, then, is an all ACC Elite 8. Just 2 weeks ago North Carolina crushed Notre Dame 78-47. While I don't think this will be a 30+ point blowout again, it still should be a decisive win for the Tar Heels. They are 9.5 point favorites, and I think they can easily win this won by double digits.
