This Saturday is championship game-day in college football. USC takes on Stanford for the Pac-12 title with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. Alabama and Florida will battle it out in the SEC. And the game I’ll be keeping my eye on is the Big Ten Championship game, where Michigan State travels to Iowa. MSU is ranked 5th and Iowa ranked 4th, so the winner should earn a trip to the College Playoffs. Michigan State, despite being on the road, and despite Iowa being undefeated, is a 4 point favorite.
ESPN has them at a 63.6% chance of winning this game. MSU’s only loss came a month ago at Nebraska when they lost 39-38. For this game, the over/ under is 52 points. MSU is -175 with the money line, and Iowa is +155. I think being undefeated and at home, yet still being an underdog will certainly motivate Iowa. They have a lot prove in this game, as the only ranked teams they beat this year were # 19 and 20, Wisconsin and Northwestern respectively. The Spartans put up 33.4 points per game, and the Hawkeyes 33.7, so offensively these teams are really close. Defensively, MSU gives up just over 3 Td’s per game, while Iowa gives up just over 18 points per game.
I think MSU will win this game, and I believe they cover the 4 point spread. Just like with Ohio State a couple weeks ago, they didn’t play a ranked team and when they did, they lost big; and by the way that loss was against MSU. I think the same happens to Iowa this week. MSU has a chance to go all the way this year, and this Saturday should be the next step in them doing so.
