Vino Rosso is a chestnut colt that was born in 2015, Kentucky-bred by John D. Gunther, and trained by Todd Pletcher who has 3 other horses he trained, Audible, Magnum Moon, and Noble Indy running is this years Kentucky Derby. Vino's sire is Curlin and dam is Mythical Bride. The dam finished on average 6th in her 7 races, not very impressive, but the sire Curlin on the other hand is a great stallion. We did an article last week on Curlin titled A Horses' Lineage: Does it Matter? If you'd like more info on Curlin, check it out.
Rosso debuted in November last year at Aqueduct and in December, won the race at Tampa Bay Downs. His owners purchased him for $410,000 and he has proven to be an asset ever since. His prospects look very promising and he is expected to put on a good performance at the Derby that is coming up. Vino Rosso is known on the tracks for his speed and his previous wins have definitely worked in his favor. The best racing class achieved by Vino Rosso so far is the Graded Stakes Winner.
Vino Rosso is ridden by John R. Velazquez who won 15 Breeder's Cups, his first was at Aqueduct Racetrack on November 2, 1985 riding Proud Truth. Velazquez also won the Kentucky Derby in 2011 riding Animal Kingdom who was 20-1 long shot, and in 2017 atop Always Dreaming.
