A Horses' Lineage: Does it Matter?

Derby Contenders

There is a lot of excitement surrounding this years Derby and I can see why. With horses such as Mendelssohn, Bolt D'Oro, Justify, and Audible running, how can there not be a lot of buzz circling the wagon. I have spent the better part of the weekend looking at the family tree of some of the top contenders for this years race and if lineage has anything to do with winning, which it does, then I feel comfortable adding Good Magic to the list.

Family Lineage

Good Magic was sired by Curlin, elected to the Hall of Fame (Horses) in 2014 and a two-time Horse of the Year (Secretariat Award) recipient with titles in 2007 and 2008. Curlin, named after a slave who fought in the Civil War, was Stonestreet Stables first horse to run in the Triple Crown finishing 3rd in the Kentucky Derby behind winner Street Sense and Hard Spun who placed. Curlin won the Preakness Stakes ahead of the same two, and places 2nd in the Belmont Stakes behind Rags to Riches. Later that same year Curlin won the Breeders’ Cup Classic ahead of Hard Spun. In 2008 he won the Dubai World Cup.

Pre Revolutionary War

As far back as we can go we found that Curlin is a descendant of Daryl Arabian, a horse brought to the States from Arabia in 1700, almost 76 years before The USA declared its independence from the Mother-land and who is only one of three of the main horses used to breed in the early stages of American Thoroughbred Horse Racing.

Curlins Creds

From 2008 through 2016 Curlin was the top earner in North America earning $10.5 million from his racing and stud skills, some of which was paid when Glinda the Good produced a foal by Curlin in 2015 named Good Magic. Good Magic is the only horse to break their maiden by winning the 4 ½ length Breeders Cup Juvenile

Good Magic

At the time I wrote this article Good Magic is listed at #6 to be in contention to win the Derby, but I’d place him in the Top 3. We still have a few more weeks to decide who to bet on so I think I will focus on the Kentucky Derby for a while. If any of you have any tips yourself, or opinions, please feel free to leave me a message on our Top 5 contact form.

Get Going

You better hurry up with that bag of popcorn, because by the time you put the bag in the microwave, pop it for 3 minutes, then wait for the suggested 1 minute for it to cool down you might miss the 2018 Kentucky Derby.
