Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves
Lackey vs Newcomb
It may be in the back of their mind, but Lackey won’t be going to the bullpen this week. With his worst record since 2011 when he was on the mound for the Red Sox the Cubs will start the 38th year on Tuesday against the Braves in Atlanta. The Cubs right hander is in the midst of a very disappointing year for Chicago thus far. With his ERA at 5.20 he seems to be handing out home runs on a silver platter. Last year he gave up 23 homers in 188.1 innings, not bad right, after all in 2016 he placed 34 out of 75 pitchers for home runs given up, but so far this season he already gave up 24 homers in just 98.2 innings, that’s 2.2 HR’s for every nine innings pitched.
In Tuesdays game the Cubs face left hander Sean Newcomb. Since he was brought up to the majors, Newcomb is 1-4 with an ERA of 4.26. His one victory came against the San Diego Padres. For Lackey this is a big game. The Cubs are looking to improve their rotation and this game just might prove to be the decision maker to keep the 38th year old in the starting rotation, or move him to the bullpen.
