St. Louis Ace out for Season

Cardinals welcome Cubs minus Wainwright

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their ace pitcher Adam Wainwright for the season, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing solid baseball as of late. They are up 2 spots from last week and now are the #1 team in the MLB Power Rankings. They are now 18-6, .750 winning percentage, going 8-2 over their last 10 games, and that is good for the best record in all of MLN baseball. Their lead in the NL Central is now 4.5 games over the 2nd place Cubs.

Most of the teams stayed about where they were last week, but there were a couple of big movers. For instance, the Houston Astros are up 9 spots to #3. They are 18-7, having won 10 in a row. That is their longest winning streak since 2004, when they won 12 in a row. This is their best 25 game start in franchise history. They are leading the league in homers, and only the Kansas City Royals are allowing fewer runs per game.

Speaking of the Royals, they are neck and neck with the Detroit Tigers, just a half game behind them. They both split a 4 game series with each other this weekend. The Royals are down just a spot in the rankings to #2. The Mets have cooled down a bit. After winning 10 straight, they have won just 3 of their last 10, including back-to-back shutout losses to the same team (Nationals), which is the first time that’s happened to them since 1942.

Well, this week starts by bringing us a lot of division rival match-ups, including the always popular Cardinals-Cubs series. If this is indeed the year the Cubs break through, no better time for them to start making a dent in the 4.5 game deficit than this key series.
